We have a narrow driveway that leads directly from a busy street to our backyard, and I’ve gotten pretty skilled at navigating the ol’ Grand Prix in reverse gear, even pre-coffee. This morning, a truck must have turned onto the street from the side road next to the park just as I was backing out, and I heard his accelerator chugging loudly just before I saw the flash of red in my rearview mirror, at the same time I was gunning my own gas pedal to get on the road before more traffic appeared.</p> <p>There’s nothing more to say other than that. I didn’t hit the truck, and he didn’t even honk his horn. Other cars passing by probably didn’t even notice. Adrenaline washed through me, cold and clean. I thought about the ways my day might have been different if I had hit him. But then every day is different, anyway, car wrecks or spilled coffee.</p> <p>I’m going to OTB with my friend Mike tonight, where we drink Pepsis and bet two dollars at a time and avoid the stares of the gritty, loping regulars.
